February 1st - 6th
LOVE - it’s more than a feeling…
February - the month of love . Valentine’s Day - an opportunity to express, in a special way, our love for our spouse or boyfriend. How does God fit into that celebration?
As the years race by, our feelings of love change. We come to understand that love means commitment - to be faithful to that special man in our life. We grow in our relationship and learn that love includes adjustments, determination and trust. We focus more on the needs of another than ourselves and our hearts are filled with joy! Ah, love seems perfect…but it isn’t.
Our love for one another can never be perfect because we are all sinners, saved only by the blood of Jesus. God’s love, agape love, is perfect: His unconditional acceptance, total self-sacrifice and understanding towards us while we were yet sinners. We’ve heard it many times before, we’ve sung it, we’ve read it; but do we truly understand the depth of John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (KJV) In Romans 5:8 the Words tells us that: “God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (KJV)
Maybe today, we can meditate on those incredible words and God’s promise of eternal life. Have we quieted ourselves long enough to consider what God experienced as He watched His only Son lay down His life in total surrender? Without spiritual eyes and Godly wisdom we cannot understand the extent of our Father’s love towards us. The Apostle Paul tells us in Ephesians 3:14-19: “For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell n your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.” (KJV)
We can’t give away something we don’t have. If we are unable to accept God’s love for us, how can we share it with others? The Word confirms in II Timothy 1:7 that “For God hath not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” Why not spend time with Him today in reverence and humbleness accepting His incredible gift!
Next week, we will explore the ways that we show our love towards God.
